As a highschool student being granted the ability to go out for lunch, Tommy's became a staple in our weekly dining. From their cheap hotdog special, 5 dolalrs for two dogs, fries and a drink- to their grease ladden pizza. The chicken poppers are good, but the hot dogs? They are the best in town. Sure, the decorations leave something to be desired, and the small parking lot can cause a headache or two if you're not careful- But They will make your dog the way you want it, and for a good price. Their menu is vast, and has several deep fried and battered goodies on it, but I go for the dogs, and nothing else. Give it a try, for five dollars, who could ask for more?

Great place as I am a fan of your other locations as well but I found this location to have bad burgers like the meat wasnt fresh and was a frozen pre packaged patty with minimal flavor, that was a big surprise considring your mchenry location burgers are my favorite with great flavorful deliciousnous. Other thsn that the people running the place are very nice and its alway a plessure doung business with u otherwise

Love the chicken sandwiches and the hot dogs. Pizza and burgers are pretty average, but the variety of food that Tommy's sells is vary impressive. This is definitely one of my favorite places to go when I'm looking for a tasty, affordable meal!

Watch out! Ordered and paid for a hot dog special (carry out) and when I got home found that they gave me a single. (It as not busy, I was the only customer at the counter) I called them to complain, the girl hung up on me! If this is how they treat their customers - look out!

Love the variety of food Tommy's has to offer. The staff is very friendly and gets orders down very quick. One weekend my family and I were coming home from a very long wrestling tournament (Go Wizards!) and ordered a pizza from Tommy's to pick up. We arrived and unfortunately they forgot to put in the pizza. I'm not quite sure how that happened, but despite waiting an extra 15 minutes in the car we received the pizza for half off plus an apology. I appreciated this and will not knock off stars because hey, crap happens & we are human. I will continue to go back!

Overpriced ($6.75) for a beef with no cheese? Very spicy meat & extremely dry (even though it was partially dipped). They should sell milkshakes here, or something. I find it absolutely ridiculous that ketchup packets are 25 cents, along with refills on drinks. The prices on every menu item are astronomical, especially when most side items are from the freezer and just thrown haphazardly into the deep fryer. Mr. A's beef down the street is much tastier.

As good as Portillo's and cheaper with larger portions. You'll always see a familiar face at the grill or behind the register (i.e., full-time employees).

The commenter above has obviously never seen how real Chicago orders their hotdogs, etc. If you are a little turned off by yelling your order, get over it! Noone cares and the food is so worth it. Great Polishes, italian beefs, hot dogs, italian sausauge, you name it. REALLY good prices for the area too. They also have pizza specials on certain nights- a large pizza for under $10. Can't beat that! This Tommys however, takes cash only, which is pretty inconvenient in todays debit card madness, but it's worth it!

Been going here for over 15 years. Love the food and the prices. Probably the main problem anyone has with them, is that they don't take credit cards.

Tommy's is the very typical and traditional Vienna joint found just about anywhere in Chicagoland. Big menu of all the right kind of stuff including beefs, sausage, dogs, polish, gyros etc. They have a super fast $5 hot dog special which they must sell thousands of every week. Almost always a line here and yes, they guy who makes the dogs calls to you from behind the counters to ask what you want. That's how its done. They have daily specials with a rib special on Saturday night which is a good or better than the ribs anywhere else in town and far cheaper. They make pizza too which is pretty good. Cash only.

I have been going to Tommy's ever since I can remember. It's one of those local places that everybody knows about and loves. Over the years, their prices have gotten more expensive, thus the reason for four stars. I usually will order their hot dog special, pizza special, or gyros special. All of these are my favorite and I can't complain. You can get food delivered, and I recommend their tomato pizza. They just renovated their dining area and it's very nice. Also, they now accept credit cards.

The $6 Hot Dog Special is fantastic. Two Chicago style dogs with fries and a drink. I remember when it was $2.50, but it's still a great deal. Just remember, ketchup has no business being on a hot dog. Especially if you are over 12 years old. The Italian beef is also superb.

Their cheeseburgers are awesome! Messy & delicious, just the way you're supposed to have them in a joint like this. Reminds me of Wolfy's on Peterson & California, but Tommy's burgers win in this round. Sad though, Hubby's gyro didn't have feta, so skip that and try something else. Typical fried food as every other hole-in-the-wall type joint; cash only; and refills are $0.25. don't forget to try the cheeseburger

Tommy's is always awesome...Burgers, Beef, Gyros, Tommy's special...my fave right now is the Cajun chicken on a pita with ranch instead of mayo!

Hot dog needs help. First you need a steamed poppy seed bun , the bun was to big for the hotdog . The hot dog was very small, I guess I should have gotten a double dog. Need to get the bright green Vienna relish. Mustard , pickle , sport pepper optional. Top with celery salt. I woul say for starters the bun that they are using might be good for a polish or Italian but not a hotdog. Trust me, old school from Chicago when you had the guy on the street corner selling dogs.

Possibly the worst gyro I ever had in my life, sloppy, messy, insanely greasy, and no napkins! In my to go bag..This place has gone to hell...it used to be fairly decent...pizza looked old as hell too...like it's been sitting there for 3 days...very over priced too...fair warning.

  • Jason G.

Their Gyros are lacking, dogs aren't that good and the pizza is NY style. I always find their buns to be hard on the edges and they make the dogs so fast that they tend to miss with the topping or don't put enough on. The service has gotten old to me...I used to appreciate their snobbyness, as though it was their schtick, but it now is just annoying. I think you'd be better off spending your hard earned dollars at Portillo's, Dante's or Kojak's...but that's just me.

I don't know why I come back to this place. I think I went here today because my normal pizza place is closed on Tuesdays. I got a slice of pepperoni, fries and a drink for $5.50. The pizza was hard, greasy, had the consistency of cardboard and had probably been sitting for several hours. The fries are easily the best thing at Tommy's. They are always Fresh out of the fryer and will burn your mouth. Refills on soda for only $.25 and they take the $.25 and put it in the donation container for multiple sclerosis. So props Tommy's for that. They finally accept credit cards... Visa and MasterCard only. There is certainly better food in the area. But if you happen to get a flat tire in the parking lot, this would be an okay place to eat.

You can't beat the Chicago area for having such diverse food. Tommy's is a semi-fast food type restaurant with quick but interesting food. The Gyros are delicious but they also have a wide variety of other food to choose from like burgers, ribs, and dogs. What is a plus is that their prices are the same if not slightly lower than chains like Burger King and McDonald but the quality is much better. The only drawback to this location is the interior does not make for the best in restaurant dining. Do not waste your money on fast food chains if you live in this area.

I love this joint. One of the best things about it, is how quick the delivery is. My wife orders the gyro special and I get the every day special (2hot dogs, fries, and soda). The have great prices.

Solid joint with a very diverse menu. Finished my third trip there this week and dig the Gyros. Not the best I've had but very good. This last time, they put Tzatziki Sauce on without my asking. If I read the menu correctly, you have to ask for Tzatziki. So I just said no tomato no onion... they put the sauce on anyway. Since the taste of cucumber is vile to me I just couldn't force myself to eat it. Recalling the French Toast Scene from "Road Trip", I was hesitant to send it back. But the guys happily corrected it for me. Good customer service. I've notice the regulars here are really friendly with the staff, that's a good sign.

Great place if you're looking for a big selection, fast service and good prices. It's a dinner so don't look for gourmet food. Not a fan of the pizza but most everything else I have had is good. I probably like the gyros best and just had the shrimp plate special and to my surprise it was pretty good. They also deliver and are probably the fastest in town. Faster than Freaky Fast.

  • Franklin D.

The cost for the two dogs, fries & drink special has gone up... $6 after tax. Still good stuff though. It's a lot of food for the price really. They've taken out a couple of the parking spots out front and put in some outdoor tables.... nice. Still cash only!

  • Eric M.

Food is a great price and if you like greasy food this is your place not always a bad thing but the service wasn't as friendly as the one in algonquin I went in and they were fast to get the food out so that is a plus! But fast isn't really all you need.

I somewhat recently moved to the Crystal Lake area and was looking for a quick place I could stop after work for food to go. Tommy's on US14 was easy so I started to go in, and have chosen to keep going in. Pros: I really like the Italian beef there, I think its superior to Portillos and many other places across the Chicago area I have tried. There is alot of seasoning in the broth. The Meatball sub is pretty good. I think that the meatballs taste like they are hand made not frozen. most other items I've gotten are decent or better and cheap. Cons: Just about everything that goes in the fryer is frozen. No free refills on Soda, but the $0.25 to charity you pay for a refill is a pretty clever way to fund raise for their charities. Fries are somewhat inconsistent. No breezeway in the doorways in this location, so when someone opens the door when its freezing the place is not warm. Notes: they do take Visa and Mastercard there, No AMEX, not sure about Discover. Need to try the pizza, it looks ok. I see that they are hand tossing the pizza in the back, which is a positive. Like that they have an 'unlimited" toppings policy for the pizza. I think more pizza places should do that.

The steak sandwich was terrible. Without a doubt some of the lowest grade meat you could possibly imagine stuffed inside a french roll. Tossed it and went to Portillo's

I like this place its fast and cheap and the food is decent. The $5 for 2 hot dog and giant amount of fries special is a very good deal broke and There are also different daily combo specials (one day is gyros for instance, very good stuff) next day is a pizza special ( I never had it though). The food quality is okay . Its a good Hot Dog Place

Had the beef and loved it both times I went. Plus I love the fact that they donate to MS.

I have been going there for about 20 years now and it is a good place to get your grease fix. Try the Foot Long Polish it's my favorite.

  • Tavo C.

The foods decent but I would not recommend the gyros at all.. I don't know if its just me but they were nasty, the worst I've ever had.

2 dog special. Been going here since we were kids - now Portillos is in the picture, but Tommys is cheaper, local, and has better dogs. Cup of cheese!

Friends were visiting from England and while out looking at homes we stopped for a "Beef" and "Dog". They had never had an Italian Beef and were thrilled with the flavor. I love LuLu's in the city, but this was darn near close. You yell your order to the guy behind the counter, he asks if you want it "dunked" and there it is a big, fresh sandwich. The $6 dog special is great as well. Cash only!

Love Tommy's the two hotdog special when I was a kid cost $3.59 now who know but who ever does know will have the cash because it is a true Chicago dog and than some! Way to go Tommy 2 I will be back every time

This place has great prices and a little of everything to eat. The pizza is the cheapest around. Great tasting food !

Back when I was in high school (2001-2005), me and my friends used to go here for lunch at least 2-3 times a week. The prices were very cheap and the food was good. The hot dog special was obviously a staple at $3.25 (2 hot dogs, fries and a drink). I used to love this place. Recently, the food just doesn't taste that good anymore. It may be because the prices have increased to a point where I could go somewhere else and get the same food with better quality. The thing that attracted me the most in high school I guess was the price tag. I do have to say that their fries are still amazing, and I still love their burgers.

Bar none my favorite place for hot dogs and italian beef. Its a taste of Chicago in the far northwest suburbs. Give it a shot and don't judge it by any of the other locations because from my experience they don't stack up (I'm looking at you McHenry).

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
